Human Services Program Internships

Despite the many changes which have come to Blue Ridge Community College, "MEN 190" and "MEN 290" have designated the same key courses for students since 1971: Coordinated Internship, the clinical experiences in the Human Services Program.  A series of two, three, and four credit internship experiences takes students through a variety of activities in agencies and institutions in the surrounding cities and counties.  There they are able to tie the knowledge, skills, and attitudes learned in the classroom with the realities of the professional field.  Graduates have gone on to work in numerous service areas, and for a growing number the internship has been the first step toward a baccalaureate or graduate degree in the helping professions.

Recent Graduates Comment On Their Internships

"My current employment was a direct result of my placement as an intern while attending BRCC in the HS curriculum.  Through this placement I was able to learn how the agency functioned in itself and in the vast network of social service agencies.  It also allowed me to develop and improve the skills I needed in order to make myself marketable for future employment."

"My boss, who graduated from JMU, remarks how valuable BRCC is because of the intensive and focused training in comparison to higher ed.  She thinks my A.A.S. is just as valuable if not more so than the bachelors and I agree!"

"Having done several internships was a big advantage.  I went through several interviews and was offered a position."

"I started as a provider from my internship.  After that I became a salaried tech.  From there I moved up to my specialist position."

"I volunteered and did an internship there, and because of my involvement I knew a position was coming available shortly after graduation, so I held out for it and got it!"

"My employment?  In response to an ad, I applied for the position.  The panel members were impressed by my Generalist education and my experience through my BRCC clinical placement."
