Note to Instructors
Urban Forestry Module

Biology Instructors enjoying black birch stems (VABE, Fall 2001. BRCC Arboretum)

Do you teach a biological science in a city?
Are your students from an urban area?
Are your students turned off by learning about distant ecosystems they may never visit?
Want to participate in making our students scientifically literate with respect to the environment?
Want to do something to improve the place where we live?
I've got just the ticket :-)

I have designed a stand alone module that any instructor can incorporate into his curriculum. I have attempted to design this module so the instructor can include specific objectives that support his existing curriculum. No exotic materials will be necessary for lecture, independent investigations, or the field field study. You should be able to find all of the resources on this web page. Although each topic is linked to other topics, I tried to make each learning objective a discrete lesson that can be taught in less than 15 minutes. If you are seeking more knowledge and experience in this area, consider taking my on-line urban forestry course (FOR 265-60 offered every spring).

During a recent VCCS workshop I participated in a training session called  Student Oriented Comprehensive Knowledge Enhancement Technique (SOCKET) and decided to adopt their process in developing the organization and presentation of the content/activities for this course.

I wish to thank the VCCS for their financial support through the LearningWare Grant program for the opportunity to participate in the SOCKET workshop. I also wish to thank the Educational Foundation of Blue Ridge Community College for their financial support in the development of field experiences in the urban forests in our service region.
