Cyberbiology Announcements

Return to Cyberbiology
New Announcements:

May 3, 2006 - The deadline for your final exam is rapidly approaching (tomorrow night). I will post your grades on my office window Friday. Please do not call or e-mail requesting your grades... I won't respond.

April 27, 2006 - One more quick announcement - a student asked a great question about urban forestry and the final exam on BlackBoard. I gave him long response indicating what material will be covered on the final exam.

April 26, 2006 - Couple of announcements:

  • I have placed your final exam on BlackBoard much sooner than previously announced. I did this because two students are leaving town early and needed to take the exam. Don't panic. It will remain on BlackBoard until midnight May 4.
  • On out of town Thursday evening and all day Friday. I'll be conducting a workshop for arborists in Culpeper, Virginia. I am absolutely certain that I will not have access to the Internet during this time. I'll respond to your e-mails and postings late Friday evening.

April 18, 2006 - I'll be out of the office (and away from the Internet) on Wednesday & Thursday (April 19 - 20).

April 7, 2006 - Thanks for being so patient while I got the extra-credit activity together.  It's ready and should be straight forward. Please click on the extra credit link provided on your home page and follow the instruction.

March 31, 2006 - Sherando is a go! Go ahead and print out all of the pages and begin briefing yourself on the scope and purpose of the assignment. I still haven't gotten in touch with the park supervisor (we're playing a long-running game of phone tag), but I really do not anticipate a problem with you guys getting into the park for free. In fact, I don't think they begin charging admission until sometime in May. Anyway, just be sure to show the gate-keeper the passage at the top of your worksheet that says you get in for free :-)

I need just a little more time to get the sign-up page ready for y'all to spread mulch (extra-credit).

March 13, 2006 - Welcome back from spring break. Couple of announcements:

  • More announcements to be made about Sherando and other year-end investigations.
  • Your grade page is gone. I have been told by my supervisors that I may not have the grades posted by your last names. I have been doing this since Fall 2001 and have never had a problem. My cyberstudents rarely knew each other. And now... someone said something to someone and I get burned. I'll try to think of an alternative. BlackBoard is out because most of our grades have nothing to do with BlackBoard and I need the flexibility of a gradebook to keep up with the way I curve and weight assignments and categories. Sorry to break the news in the manner, but I am more than a little upset about the way I had to find out (via all my supervisors).

March 2, 2006 - After Cybersaturday I returned to campus to get clobbered with pre & post mid-term issues from my other classes. Here's a summary of where I am with various projects concerning your class:

  • Inv: Tree Identification Activity. I'm running out to the arboretum to update the ribbons for your tree identification activity (link can be found on your schedule page). The winter dichotomous key didn't turn out as well as I was hoping. If you have a modicum understanding of trees you should be o.k. using the dichotomous key "without foliage." If you want to play it safe, you may want to wait until leaves start to emerge in April so you can use the dichotomous key with "foliage." After you complete the activity, take the quiz (Inv: Tree Identification Quiz) on BlackBoard.
  • Inv: Sherando Field Study. I've drafted a letter to the director of the Sherando Lake Recreation Area. I need to let my colleagues review and sign-off. Then I mail. Then I call to confirm receipt and re-affirm our understanding. Hopefully, soon after the spring break (next week, hooray!) I'll be able to post an update concerning my success getting permission for y'all getting in without paying the admission fee.
  • Extra credit. Sorry, too much going on this week to work on extra credit. I'll update this item after the break.
  • Am I forgetting something? Give me a holler on BlackBoard.

February 27, 2006 - Your grades have been posted. Head on over to the grade page and follow the instructions. All of those other things we discussed Saturday are in motion and I'll need the rest of tomorrow morning/afternoon to continue working on them. I'll post another announcement with a timeline for the rest. I just wanted to rush out and post the above link because I knew you were waiting.

February 9, 2006 - No office hours on Friday - I'll be in Charlottesville giving a presentation. I'll be able to respond to e-mails later in the afternoon.

January 26, 2005 - Here's another "reality check" of where you should be in the course at this time.

  • The deadline for completing Test #1 and the first Investigation Quiz will be February 3 (midnight).
  •  Next week you should be rolling into the next unit (Population Genetics and Evolution). There will also be an Investigation Quiz and Test to complete in that unit.
  • Do y'all have some questions? Please e-mail them to me... or, better yet, post them on BlackBoard so everyone can benefit from our exchange.
  • Heads Up! I'm going out of town this weekend and I won't return until Thursday of next week. Get those questions to me ASAP otherwise I won't be able to respond until next week (Thursday).

January 19, 2005 - Here is a "reality check" of where you should be in the course at this time:

  • You should of already logged onto BlackBoard and
    • logged onto the Discussion board with a howdy to your classmates
    • taken the practice quiz (which doesn't count for a grade)
      • the purpose of the practice quiz is todemonstrates to you (and me) that your computer will work with future tests and quizzes.
  • You should be finishing up with your second week of lectures on the Thinkwell CDs (i.e. you should be completing Linked Genes and Genetic Mapping).
  • You should be doing, or about to do, the two on-line investigations (Fly Lab and Pedigree Lab)
    • Note: This quiz is already posted on BlackBoard... However, please do not attempt this quiz until AFTER you have completed both labs and have a handle on the material.
    • Good news! The Fly Lab and the Pedigree Lab have been combined into one quiz and that quiz is open notes :-)
  • You should have marked down the dates that tests and quizzes will be available on your personal calendar(s).
  • You should have told everyone around you that you are not available on February 25 because you will be on campus all day performing labs and taking a midterm exam.

January 10, 2005 - Welcome all!

  • Thanks for logging onto BlackBoard and making your presence known. So far 11 (out of 24) students have logged on and said Howdy. Thanks also for taking the practice quiz (on BlackBoard) which demonstrates your ability to successfully take an on-line quiz.
  • Get out those CDs and get into those lectures ASAP. Print off the questions I have for each lecture (links provided on the schedule page). Remember, the makers of the CD will be trying to pull you into their website with the false promise that I have a personal web page there - but I don't. Feel free to use any and all resources that they offer (on their CD and their web site). But, what really matters to me are the questions linked from my schedule page. You won't be turning your responses in to me. Instead, keep those responses as your "lecture notes."

January 5, 2005 - It's crazy... classes don't start until Monday but we already have people logging onto BlackBoard and saying Howdy. Y'all sure are motivated.

December 18, 2005 - Welcome to Spring 2006 Cyberbiology. Jump back to the opening page and print/read the welcome letter, syllabus, schedule, FAQ,....
