July 22, 2008 - Final announcements!

  • Deadline for Test #3 is tonight.
  • Deadline for turning in Behavior and Sherando investigations is July 25. Place your completed worksheets in the appropriate folder on my office door (J113). Hard copies only. NO e-mail attachments. NO faxes.
  • Deadline for Tree Identification quiz is July 25.
  • Deadline for Test #4 is July 28.  (Whoops... there is one error on the test. Sorry about that. I will be curving the test so that no one is harmed by the one question that has an incorrect answer marked as the correct answer.)
  • Please complete the end of course evaluation on BlackBoard between July 24 - July 29.
  • Final exam is online. It will be available on BlackBoard from July 24 - July 29. Please don't wait until the last minute to take it. It's not wise to put that much faith into the thinking the Internet is that reliable.

July 14, 2008 - Okay... here are several announcements:

  • Class average on the midterm exam was 86%
  • Your interim grades are being mailed out today.
  • The extra credit opportunity is up and running. Go to this link (Extra Credit) and carefully read the directions.

July 8, 2008 - How are we doing?

  • I'm on my to duplicating to make copies of your midterm exams (details available online by clicking on our cybersaturday link from your schedule page). I've added some really good quality links to help you complete the "Histology" worksheets linked from our cybersaturday page.
  • Deadline for your second quiz (Pop Genetics & Evolution) and your second test is tomorrow at midnight.

July 2, 2008 - Hooray! I secured permission for all of you (and your hiking buddies) to get into Sherando Lake Recreation Area for free to complete your Field Study. For more information about the field study, click on the appropriate link on your schedule page. Begin scheduling a time to go there before the due date (also listed on your schedule page). I will have much more to say about this assignment during our cybersaturday meeting.

July 1, 2008 - Couple of announcements:

  • The deadline for your first test and quiz is rapidly approaching. Check your lecture schedule for details.
  • Starting to get some good questions on the BlackBoard discussion board. Please read every post. It's important. Your fellow students are in the same boat as you and are probably asking questions that you are pondering. Jennifer posted an excellent question about autosomal v. sex-linked inheritance of recessive disorders. (Thanks Jennifer!)
  • Sherando field study. I'll be making detailed comments about upcoming field investigations during our cybersaturday. I just wanted you to know that I'm currently at level 7 in the multi-layered burrito system that makes up our federal park system. I'm 99.99% sure that you will be allowed into Sherando Lake Recreation Area for free later this month (you will go at your convenience, click on the assignment for additional details). I just want to speak the head honcho before officially turning you loose on that particular assignment.

June 26, 2008 - Attention BIO 102 students! So.... how are we doing? Two announcements:

  • I only see that 11 of you have logged onto BlackBoard to say Howdy to your classmates. Are the rest of you lurking in the background? A few of you have taken the practice quiz but still need to say Howdy to your classmates. Please do so as soon as possible. Why? If I don't hear from you by Monday, the college will academically drop you from the class. So, please - get active.
  • I'll be posting the first quiz and the first test on BlackBoard tomorrow. Only click on the quiz and/or test (on BlackBoard) if you are ready to take those assessments. You are not allowed to click, have a quick look, and back-out. You only get one shot to take them, so make sure you have completed all of the lectures or lab assignments before attempting the appropriate assessment.

June 24, 2008 - Attention BIO 102 students! Welcome. I'm activating links and assignments today. By the end of the day the BlackBoard site will be up and running and the syllabus and schedule and more good stuff should be ready. I'll make more announcements tomorrow... on our first day of class!!!

June 24, 2008 - Attention BIO 101 students! Well, that's it. I graded all the final exams (class average was 76%). I typed up another detail summary of your grades and placed them in the afternoon mail. I have also entered your final grade on SIS... but I'm not sure when the college makes the grade available to you via SIS. Oh well, you'll find out your grade in a day or two when it arrives in the mail. Please don't call or e-mail me requesting your grades. For privacy reasons... I'm not allowed to give out your grade by phone or e-mail.

June 19, 2008 - Our first semester is just about over.

  • Test #4 deadline is tonight!
  • Your final exam (see link from your schedule page for details) is in the Learning Assistance Center (LAC). See the schedule page for the deadline and a link (click on "Final Exam") with additional information. The nice ladies in the LAC should give you a course evaluation form to complete with your final exam.
  • I'll calculate your grades early next week and mail the final grades to the same addresses I used for your interims.
  • For those of your climbing onto the second semester online biology train... I'll be hooking-up the schedule tomorrow and hopefully posting it.

June 16, 2008 - Okay, the extra credit opportunity is ready.... if you are. Here's a link to the page to see if you're interested: Extra Credit (July 08).

June 4, 2008 - The midterms are in the Learning Assistance Center. To see how long they'll be available click on the appropriate link on your lecture schedule (hint: June 9 is the deadline). To see what is on the Midterm exam, click the same link. Remember to take a number 2 pencil, bring a photo ID, and get there two hours before closing so you'll have plenty of time to take the exam.

May 29, 2008 - Are we settled in? One deadline has passed (first two quizzes) and another looms on the horizon. Tomorrow night (midnight) is the deadline for Test #1 and the Natural History quiz. Make sure you have the deadlines posted on your personal calendars.

May 20, 2008 - Welcome aboard everyone! I have three announcements:

  1. Thanks so much for logging onto BlackBoard to say "Howdy" and to take the practice quiz. Don't be shy. Please post questions on BlackBoard's Discussion Board so that I can answer them and everyone can benefit from the answer.
  2. I'm making one small correction to the Natural History Investigation. The primate section of the museum is still under construction. At the top of the primate page there is statement that did say it was under construction until September 2007... I corrected this so it now says September 2008. Either way, don't worry. There will be no questions from this portion of the investigation on your quiz.
  3. Quizzes and tests will begin popping up on the BlackBoard Assignment page beginning tomorrow. You get one opportunity to take each quiz/test. Please don't click on these quizzes/tests until you are ready to take them (i.e. you have completed the appropriate activities linked from our schedule page).

May 15, 2008 - Rumor has it that BlackBoard will be available late today (Thursday) or tomorrow morning (Friday). Although the first day of class is Monday, some of you have already contacted me and are eager to get started. Here's what I would like for everyone to do by Monday (May 19):

  • Take the practice on BlackBoard

    • Why? To demonstrates to you and me that you and your computer will be able to take your tests and quizzes on BlackBoard successfully.

  • Say "Howdy" to your classmates on the BlackBoard's Discussion Board

    • Why? I'm using your "howdies" on the Discussion Board AND your successful completion of the practice quiz as attendance. There is a new policy at the college: I have to report all non-attending students by Friday to admissions. They will then perform an administrative "drop" of non-attending students. Serious stuff. Why? Students scamming federal grants for money. Shame, shame, shame. Oh well, just log onto BlackBoard and read all of the posts on the Discussion Board (we already have some good questions and answer threads going), say howdy to your classmates and then take the practice quiz (which doesn't count for a grade).

May 14, 2008 - Thinkwell (the publisher of our textbook) used to distribute our textbook on CDs. Last fall they switched and placed the material on their website. So, when you go to our bookstore and attempt to purchase the CDs you end up purchasing a small box that contains a piece of cardboard and one piece of paper containing instructions on how to register onto the Thinkwell webpage. Okay... listen up!

  • If you have the CDs... continue using them. Nothing has changed. Don't worry about going to the Thinkwell website, everything you need is on the CDs. There is nothing on the Thinkwell website you need. End of story :-)

  • If you purchased the new "package" I described above... well... follow the instructions and register. You will find all of the necessary videos and materials on the Thinkwell website. For example, you can click on "Course Home" or "Chapter Checklist" and find the headings that match up with the topics listed on your schedule page (BIO 101).

May 14, 2008 - How are we doing? Questions? Please post them on your BlackBoard Discussion group so everyone can benefit from the answer. Three web sites?

  • This is the course homepage (with most of the information): http://www1.brcc.edu/murray/cyberbio/default.htm

    • You will spend a lot of time visiting this page. It is from this page that you will click on "Lecture Schedule" to see find the questions you need to focus on when listening to your lectures. Please read the FAQ before e-mailing me with questions (link on our homepage and the first cell of the lecture schedule).

  • This is BlackBoard (only for taking tests/quizzes and reading our Discussion Board): https://br.my.vccs.edu/jsp/home.jsp

  • And for those of you that purchased the new Thinkwell web access instructions: https://www.thinkwell.com/

  • And for those of you that purchased the CDs.... just use the CDs. You don't need to invest your time trying to register on Thinkwell. It's fine with me if you want to try. You may find some useful information. But again, I only used the information from those CDs when I developed this course.

May 13, 2008 - You did receive the Welcome Letter... didn't you? If not, here's a link.
