July 27, 2007 - I left a similar message on
our discussion board but I thought I would repeat it here again... I'm
going way, way, way out of town for the next week. I'll be back in time
to grade your investigations and average your grades on Friday. I will
be checking e-mails and our BlackBoard discussion board - please post
those questions ASAP. Knock out those two investigations and slide them
under my temporary office door (Vet Tech building B108). And, finish
your last test, Tree ID quiz, and the final exam by the dates listed on
your schedule.
July 25, 2007 - Keep on trucking! You are
almost to the end. Please check out BlackBoard. I responded to some
excellent questions with links for additional information concerning
exam questions from the urban forestry unit and suggestions for writing
up your squirrel investigation. July 22,
2007 - Okay. Your interim grades are done. Here's the story:
- On BlackBoard I have created two columns. One
has your midterm exam grade and the other has your interim grade
(where you are in the class so far). Note: both are expressed as a
percentage (out of 100%).
- I'm keeping your grades on a spreadsheet on
another computer. I do not use the grade sheet calculator offered by
BlackBoard (it doesn't allow me to curve). I have a list of all the
scores you have earned, as well as your lecture, investigation, and
class average on a small piece of paper folded up and taped to my
temporary office door on campus (Vet Tech Building; office B108).
- Please note: I did instruct the spreadsheet
to drop your lowest investigation and test score. Should you score
lower than one of those dropped scores than the new lowest score
will be dropped and the previously dropped score will be thrown back
into play.
- Please come bye campus and check your print
out. If you are unable to get to campus I can snail mail it to you
(e-mail your home address) . I'm not e-mailing the interims for
security/privacy reasons (I got burned by doing this in the past).
It's important that you check your interim print out for errors!
July 22, 2007 - Just about done grading
and will soon post grades on BlackBoard... one quick announcement: I
need the following to e-mail me as soon as possible ((murrayj@brcc.edu)
assuming they are still in the class):
- Adam Campbell
- Natalie Taylor
- Josh Thingstad
Note to everyone. If you drop the class...
please make sure you work directly with our admissions
department. Contact them immediately for deadlines and
procedures for dropping courses.
July 17, 2007 - Couple of announcements....
and, as always, go your schedule page and click on the appropriate link
for additional information.
- The deadline (July 19) is rapidly approaching
for you midterm exam (must be taken on campus).
- The next test (Test #3) will be going live on
BlackBoard in a couple of days.
- There are three activities you should be
working one: Tree Identification, Behavior, & Sherando.
- I just got off the phone with Sherando
and everything is fine for you to enter the park without paying.
Please print off a copy of the permission letter (follow the
link from the schedule page), and bring along the worksheet (it
also has a blurb on the top of the page about getting in for no
charge), and patiently and politely explain to the gatehouse
representative that we have this arrangement (showing the letter
and worksheet). Somewhere this agreement is posted in the
gatehouse. Please be patient with the gatehouse people, they are
usually seniors and volunteers just trying to help out the park
system they so dearly love :)
- Did I miss anything? If so please post a
question on BlackBoard.
July 12, 2007 - Lots of announcements:
- Today is the deadline for Test #2 and the
"Population Genetics & Evolution" Quiz.
- Your midterm exam is in the learning
assistance center and will remain there until July 19. As always...
click on the link from your schedule page for additional
information.
- I just posted your Cardiology quiz (again,
see your schedule for details on content and availability)
- Give me a couple of more days to hammer out
the details with the US Forest Service concerning your "free"
entrance into the Sherando Recreation Area to complete your
succession worksheet.
- The trees in the arboretum that are part of
the identification activity all have ribbons on them now.
- And again, to make sense of the above PLEASE
go to our schedule page, click on the appropriate link and read,
read, read. Lots of stuff to do. Get started ASAP.
- And yes, this time you will have two things
to hand in to me around the end of the semester (Sherando Worksheet
and your Behavior Investigation). You will slide these under my
temporary office door (B108) (that's in the Vet Tech Building).
Again..... see your schedule page for details and the due date.
July 5, 2007 - Well... it appears the
Blackboard discussion board has settled down in the "60" section and
never really got started in the "62" section. Please post those
questions if you are confused about anything. You have your first
deadline today! Test 1 and the first investigation quiz.
June 22, 2007 - I will be in Washington DC
Saturday through Tuesday. I may be away from computers for most of the
time. I hope to respond to e-mails and Discussion board posts on Monday
and Tuesday evenings.
- BIO 101 folks... you should be about done.
Check your schedule to see what remains. Questions? Ask me ASAP.
Your course is over on Monday. I will be grading your exams on
Tuesday and then averaging your grades on Wednesday. I hope to post
your grades on BlackBoard by Thursday.
- BIO 102 folks... welcome! I have posted a
welcome letter for you on the homepage. Please go over to BlackBoard
(when they activate your account) and log on. Take the practice quiz
and post a Howdy on the discussion board.
June 19, 2007 - Your final exams will
be ready and waiting for you beginning tomorrow in the learning
assistance center. Please go to your schedule page and click on the
final exam link (bottom of page) for more information and to see the
dates of availability.
June 15, 2007 - Your midterm exams and
interims have been posted on BlackBoard. Please note I have also
adjusted the due dates for Test 3. Attention Ronald Porter! Please
e-mail ASAP.
June 4, 2007 - How are we doing? Are you
keeping up with your schedule? Check it often... it does change. For
example: I added a couple of days to the deadline for the Enzyme quiz
and second test. Also, please note that it's about time to take your
midterm exam (on campus).
May 23, 2007 - Good morning. I am launching
your first three quizzes and Test #1 on BlackBoard this morning.
Complete your assignments and make sure you take these quizzes and the
test before the deadline. When is the deadline? Go to the schedule page
and see the dates listed for each assessment. Got general questions?
Post them on BlackBoard. But send those personal questions or problems
taking quizzes on BlackBoard directly to me by e-mail.
May 21, 2007 - Hello, hello, hello! We are
officially underway. A couple of announcements:
- The syllabus and schedule will be updated
this morning (links to these are on my
homepage).
- For those of you that have not rec'd the
welcome letter (late registration, parent's snail mail address, dog
ate it...) please see the link on my homepage. If you haven't done
so, please click on over to BlackBoard and introduce yourself to
your classmates and then take the practice quiz (don't panic... the
practice quiz does not count as a grade). Please accomplish these
tasks today so I can get a handle on the size and composition of the
class.
- Get started on the ThinkWell lectures and
other assignments. I know it seems like a lot when you look through
the schedule page but you can do it. Jump in and see how many
lectures you can process today. This will help you budget your time
so you can stay on track with posted deadlines. I recommend writing
these posted deadlines on your personal calendar, personal agenda,
and/or mirror in your bathroom.
- So far I only have the 101 schedule posted. I
know a number of you will be taking 102. I hesitate posting that
schedule because it often leads to confusion (not to mention a bunch
of 102 students suddenly jump in on the discussion board with 102
questions).
- Continue posting your questions on
BlackBoard. I'll do my best to answer them as quick as possible.
Read all of the posts on BlackBoard, I think you'll find it helpful
as you learn to navigate your way around this course. Jump in,
the water is fine!
