Burke Gilman Trail (Seattle, WA)
Return to Greenway

Return to Trees & Crime

Burke Gilman Trail (Parks & Recreation). Wonderful web site (includes maps, trail guide, and their vegetation management plan).

The following images are from my trip to Seattle (late July 2002)
Adobe Corporate Office Building (between Freemont Ave & Aurora Ave)
A benefit to having a greenway run along (through) a business property is the additional security. The "man in black" (below) approached me to soon after I began walking around taking pictures.

Natural surveillance from the corporate office could be improved with better selection of plant material. It's particularly important that natural surveillance is being performed on the first floor (in order to rush outside to assist someone and for observing possible assailants.

This area (to the jogger's left) existed between the vegetation and lake. Should be landscaped to prevent it from being used as an area of concealment. Bridge (Aurora Ave) support structure "tagged." Secured bollards (I hope rescue crews have the key)

View (west) from the Freemont Bridge. Great surveillance! Pedestrians use lower "gravel" path while bikes and other wheeled contraptions use upper "paved" path.

Unassigned space. Lack of lighting and visibility makes this space a potential problem. Personally, I noticed that pedestrians and cyclists viewed me with suspension when I was in this area. Moving along just another 20 feet along the path, folks gave me the normal friendly Seattle greeting.
Gas Works Park

Lovely open space. Popular for picnics and festivals. Nestled in the row of evergreens (separating park from developed areas) are signs of homeless "homes." Homeless belongings located just to the left and right of this path in the tree lined area (perfect smash-n-grab potential)

Limited gray infrastructure... so the trees get tagged!
