Spanish Bayonet Yucca (Yucca aloifolia)
Plant Selection
Spanish Bayonet Yucca (Yucca aloifolia)
Also called Dagger Plant

Description

  • Ultimate height and width - In the optimum climate (i.e. Florida), it may grow up to a height of 20 feet before becoming top heavy and falling over. The entire plant may measure three to four feet across.
  • Foliage
  • Trunk/branch/trunk characteristics
  • Flower/fruit - Flowers in a manner similar to the above Adam's-needle yucca.

CPTED Properties:

  • Access Control - Same as above.... except this time its bark is as bad as its bite! Since the shrub grows up, younger foliage is pointed upward while the older foliage is pointed downward. An excellent plant choice to prevent access to first floor windows.
  • Natural Surveillance - Spanish Bayonet will grow taller than Adam's-needle but due to its slender form it will not obstruct natural surveillance.
  • Territoriality -

Requirements

  • Hardiness & Urban Toughness - USDA Zones 8 to 11. Hold on Virginia! This type of yucca plant can just barely cling to sandy soils located along the shore and in the tidewater region of the Old Dominion.
  • Light - Requires full sun.
  • Potential Urban Conflicts - Bumping into this shrub will cause a painful puncture. Avoid planting along access routes used by public, unless it's imperative that there be absolute access control for a particular area.
