Adam's Needle Yucca (Yucca filamentosa)
Plant Selection
Adam's-needle Yucca (Yucca filamentosa)

Description

  • Ultimate height and width - Perhaps 2 to 4 foot in height and the same in width. Ultimately depends on climatic conditions. ????????
  • Foliage - Leaves are wide, erect and spreading but do not inflict as much pain.
  • Trunk/branch/trunk characteristics - Trunk absent. Foliage basically arises as a rosette from the base of the shrub.
  • Flower/fruit - In the summer, a 3 to 6 foot shoot rockets up from the center of the plant and produces a concentrated collection of flowers.

CPTED Properties:

  • Access Control - Its bark is not as bad as its bite! Unlike other yucca plants, the leaves of the Adam's-needle lack the sharp edges. Just the appearance of this low growing evergreen shrub suggests to a potential trespasser that pain will be involved in wading through a dense planting of yucca. If you live in a warm enough climate (zones 8 to 10) you should consider the Spanish Bayonet (Yucca aloifolia).
  • Natural Surveillance - Because this shrub remains relatively small and lacks branching (all leaves arise from the base) it provides excellent access control while not hindering natural surveillance.
  • Territoriality -

Requirements

  • Hardiness & Urban Toughness - USDA Zones 4 to 9. Although yucca can tolerate a variety of soils, they are sensitive to "wet feet" (excessively wet soil).
  • Light
  • Potential Urban Conflicts
