Measuring the depth of the holes.

2.JPG (90581 bytes)1.JPG (100582 bytes)  Each hole was measured with a 3 or 5 gallon container so that when the tree planting frenzy begins we can be sure that the trees will not be planted too deep.

packing.JPG (98731 bytes) Every hole needed to have some soil added before being packed down and re-measured.

Adding Amendments

peat3.JPG (95030 bytes)To calculate how much peat moss was needed for 25% of the backfill, we completely filled one hole with peat4.JPG (85069 bytes)soil. The soil was carefully removed and measure with this bucket. It was determined that 2.5 buckets of peat moss was needed in each hole.

Arbortie

In conjucntion with DeepRoot Inc., an additional experiment has been incorporated into the larger tree planting project. Arbortie is a relatively new product which appears to serve as an excellent staking material. The folks at DeepRoot are confident that the white Arbortie will breakdown much sooner than the green Arbortie. Since no one has performed this research we thought this particular project would be perfect for such a study.
