I.      COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a conversational immersion experience for students or community members with an intermediate high level of spoken proficiency in Spanish.  Modules for a number of professions will develop speaking competency and grammar across professional lines.  Targeted professionals are teachers, community volunteers, law enforcers, nurses, and others.  Spanish 212 or intermediate-high proficiency level is required.

II.         STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

Students will:

1. Advance one level in their speaking proficiency through participation in conversational activities

2. Expand vocabulary within and between professions

3. Use verbs and verbs with certain prepositions with greater accuracy

4. Demonstrate an advanced low speaking proficiency upon completion of course

5. Converse for  38 hours in Spanish.

III.              EVALUATION AND REQUIREMENTS:

 

Attendance Policy: 

Attendance at all class meetings is required.  Class will be divided into three sessions per weekend: Friday p.m., Sat a.m., and Sat. p.m.  Missing two sessions will result in a lowering of the participation grade by one full letter grade.  Tardiness or leaving early twice equals missing one session.

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
60-69 = D
59 or lower = F

Gradable Content: 

Homework – 25%

Attendance and Participation – 25%

Four unit evaluations – 25%

Spoken proficiency exit exam – 25%

We will add some web links, some materials on reserve, and a list of movies  for homework.  We will also give handouts at the end of each weekend and/or session.

 Sept 10-14: work with materials given by instructors

Listen to a radio station in Spanish (30 minutes)

Watch a television station in Spanish ( 1 hour)

More specific assignments will be given in this space closer to the opening of fall semester

Introduce Module 2: Retailers, real estate (alquilar) & receptionists

Expand module 2

Repeat requirement outlined in the first week

Introduce Module 3: Doctors, nurses, dentists, free clinics, Health office
