Roundtable Committee
Purpose of International Roundtable committee
The
purpose of the International Roundtable Committee is to investigate, develop,
enhance, and promote international awareness within the Blue Ridge Community
College community, by:
- Increasing the internationalized content of
BRCC courses
- Inviting speakers from the various ethnic and
national groups living in our service area
- Promoting cultural awareness through
activities, forums, and educational exchanges
- Improving our community’s awareness of
being part of a vital global entity with all that entails (i.e. politics,
economy, environment, social concerns, etc.)
The
Academic Program
·
Develop a
list of internationalized courses and pursue the method whereby a student can
graduate with a diploma with a seal for having taken a certain number of
internationalized courses.
·
add a
course on a part of Middle Eastern History
by Fall 2001
- add
a course on a part of Asian History by Fall 2002
- Encourage
the study of foreign languages
- Conduct
a survey, Fall 2000, on languages students will commit to studying
- continue
the biennial Nursing 193 course to Costa Rica
- add
a multi-disciplinary class to study in a European country
- Promote
international projects through the Honors Program
- Maintain
scrapbooks on all study abroad experiences
- Encourage
involvement of non-humanities courses in internationalizing curriculum
(example: Have an international business fair)
The Technical Programs

Encourage involvement of technical programs in internationalizing
curriculum
The
Community Programs
- Continue
to develop and refine the ESL classes (specific mission statement attached)
- Continue
to provide workshops with Human Resource Providers
- Involve
our immigrant community more in our college cultural affairs programs
- Contact
community businesses about the possibility of funding programs for SOEL
children in the summer to practice English…ESL Summer Camp
- Create
brochure for ESL classes with short info in various languages
- Create
a web site for internationalization and internationalized courses.
The Faculty and/or Classified personnel
- Attend
or present workshops on internationalization as it pertains to your
job.
- Establish
a college chapter of Ruritan club
- Seek
opportunities for international experiences
- Lead
a class/trip or participate in a
class/trip
- Internationalize
your curriculum or office
The Student Government Association
- Consider
the creation of an international study scholarship of $2000 per year to be
awarded to the student who can demonstrate in writing the way in which the
money would be used to support study abroad plans that would enhance the
person’s career opportunities.
- Continue
to promote International/intercultural activities
International Roundtable Project Director and Co-director
- Meet
monthly with the Roundtable
- Find
grant opportunities for various constituents
- Monitor
progress of ESL classes and needs
- Maintain
partnerships with community groups for providing solutions to needs
- Encourage
everyone to meet the challenge of the global community
- Maintain
an office where students can get information about international study.
- Create
a glossy leaflet or brochure promoting the idea of internationalization to
everyone.
The
Educational Foundation
- We
will request assistance from the Foundation for travel funds for the year
2002 for the nursing program not to exceed $5000 for 5 student aid packages.
- We
will request assistance from the Director of Development to create an
International Studies Endowment Fund.
The
Administrators
- The
International Roundtable Committee takes this opportunity to express our

the last two years.
